Any person with ovaries who lives long enough will go through it. Menopause. They can look forward to the possibility of hot flashes, brain fog, urinary issues, sexual dysfunction, mood swings, memory decline and that’s just naming a few.

Historically, women have often been understudied and undertreated in health science, and menopause is no exception. Studies show that women feel like they do not receive the proper menopausal care due to a knowledge gap among their healthcare professionals.

Ray LeBov is well known around the Capitol—not just for his prowess as a lobbyist and former legislative counsel but also for his kindness, generosity and joy he brings everywhere he goes. Over the last 50 years, he has shaped the lobbying community, both through his work in the legislature, as a lobbyist and as a mentor to thousands of advocates.

Hollywood often portrays lobbyists as collusive dealmakers, but LeBov sees the profession differently. He says it’s not about twisting arms but being prepared, strategic, and honest. Those who work with him or have taken his seminars praise how he approaches lobbying the right way.

The Capitol’s Fellows programs are considered some of the toughest to break into, and Erica Costa is no stranger to that challenge. A graduate of the Assembly Fellows Program, followed by over 15 years of public service experience, she was recently named director of the Senate Fellows Program at the Center for California Studies at Sacramento State University.

“It is really an incredible honor to be able to do this. I’m thrilled to be able to circle back to the program that gave me my start in public service, and the Capitol Fellows programs are just a wonderful way for folks who are interested and passionate about public service to get their start,” Costa said.

From representing his country in the United States Marine Corps to expressing himself by creating music, Maurice Elamrani has no shortage of experiences to bring to his role as City College’s new public relations technician.

As the PR tech for City College, Elamrani described his duties as disseminating accurate information to stakeholders, protecting the City College brand and boosting student engagement through media. He started the job in October, and is part of a two-person department, reporting to the campus public information officer.

On Wednesday, May 14, Capitol Weekly and the University of California Student and Policy Center hosted “California Insurance Crisis,” its first in-person gathering of the year and second conference of 2025. Held at the Student and Policy Center’s conference center, the event featured three panels and a keynote address from the California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. Discussions ranged from the overall state of the insurance industry to the impact of the Los Angeles wildfires and the path forward.

As the keeper of that time, it’s no wonder schedulers wish there was more of it. Whether in a seasoned legislator’s office or a brand new member, the requests for that person’s time are never-ending.

So how do they decide who gets what time?

Jenn Short, who has navigated the offices of four different legislators over 15 years, says that’s where their expertise in knowing their legislator’s priorities shines.
